DBT in Music Therapy Resource Hub

Learn DBT Skills Through a Music Therapy Lens

A guided 52-week learning experience

for music therapists who want to understand DBT and begin bringing its practical skills into their clinical work.

Each week, you will:

  • experience a mindfulness practice
  • learn a DBT skill
  • explore a music-based intervention or activity that reinforces the skill
  • put what you're learning into practice personally and clinically
Join the DBT Resource Hub

Complete the guided learning path and earn 21 CMTE credits.

01 Learn Practical DBT Skills You Can Bring Into Your Work

Build your understanding of DBT's four core skill areas and discover how they can support the work you're already doing with clients.

  • Mindfulness to help clients become more aware, present, and less reactive.
  • Distress Tolerance to help clients get through difficult moments without making things worse
  • Emotion Regulation to help clients better understand and manage emotions
  • Interpersonal Effectiveness to strengthen communication, relationships, boundaries, and self-respect

02 Bring the DBT Skills to Life Through Music

You won't just learn what the DBT skills are. You'll explore practical ways to teach and reinforce them through music therapy.

Each skill includes music-based resources to help you move from understanding the skill to using it in your clinical work, including:

  • Music therapy interventions and activities designed around specific DBT skills
  • Video demonstrations so you can see and hear how the activities work
  • Session ideas you can adapt for your own clients and settings
  • Additional intervention ideas from the book Creative DBT Activities Using Music
  • Opportunities to develop and share your own music-based DBT interventions

So when you learn a DBT skill, you're not left wondering, “Now how do I use this in music therapy?"

03 Learn, Share, and Grow Alongside Other Music Therapists

You don't have to figure out how DBT fits into music therapy practice on your own.

  • Connect in the forum with other music therapists who are learning and using DBT skills in their clinical work.
  • Share what's working as you try music-based DBT interventions with your clients.
  • Exchange intervention ideas and discover how other music therapists are adapting DBT skills for different populations and settings.
  • Join monthly consultation groups to bring questions, share successes and challenges, and deepen your understanding of the skills with professional peers.

The combination of guided learning, ongoing discussion, and live consultation gives you support as you begin bringing DBT skills into your music therapy practice.

04 Here's What a Week Inside the Resource Hub Looks Like

Each week follows a guided learning process designed to help you experience the skill, understand it, connect it with music, and apply it.

1. Start with Mindfulness
Begin with a guided mindfulness experience you can practice yourself and potentially adapt for your clinical work.

2. Learn the DBT Skill
Watch a video lesson that breaks down the week's DBT skill and helps you understand how and why it is used.

3. Explore the Skill Through Music
Experience a song, music therapy intervention, or activity designed to teach or reinforce the skill.

4. Put It Into Practice
Complete an assignment that may include personal practice, clinical application, readings, reflection, and sharing ideas with the community.

Week by week, you'll build your understanding of DBT while developing practical ways to bring the skills into your music therapy work.

What Members are Saying

“I joined this membership to learn the language of DBT. I like the fact that I can learn at my own pace. Some weeks I have more time than others so it’s a good balance. I have become more aware of glitches in my own life by learning many DBT concepts. It allows me to continue to grow and treat each experience as unique and inspiring - I hope to bring this to my clients as well!  I feel that I’m getting everything out of the program that I expected- and more.  I feel that there are many ways to reach out, ask questions, and utilize the resources provided. "

- Nola Karim, MT-BC

"I just want to take a minute and give a shout-out to Deborah and the team! Since starting this journey I feel I have found a home and reignited a spark that I didn't know was out!! Everyone involved has put so much time and effort into making this a meaningful experience and it shows! Thank you so much to Deborah, Suzanne, Bailey, Alice, Stephen and Lauren your dedication has made an impact on this Music Therapist and person. I can't wait to see where this takes me!"

- Hillary Cartner- Ambrose MT-BC

“ Since signing up for this membership I've found it beneficial both personally as well as for my professional career. I'm a music therapist working in a VA program, where they have a nationwide push for whole health skills, which includes mindfulness. Heaven knows my year has been crazy, and because the way everything is presented resonates with me it's really helped me. This works and makes so much sense. I can do this. It helps me be a better person which will in turn help my clients.  I like that there is no time limit in processing the information and that they give us time to take it in and time to apply it.”
